Guide For Buying a Sturdy Dog House For Your Family Dog

Uncategorized No Comments »

Many people just beginning their search for a new dog house start to wonder just how complex it needs to be. It can be hard to determine what a dog house really needs. The first thing to consider is whether you really actually need an outdoor dog house.

Dogs that have spent most of their lives indoors will not want to move outside no matter how nice the doghouse. Since dogs are very social animals they will probably find life with you indoors more attractive. While your dog may not move outdoors permanently many outdoor dog houses can be a temporary shelter for times when your dog must be outdoors.

There are other dogs, however, who need to live outdoors all the time. Dog houses for these types of dogs must be very sturdy and have additional comfort. Whether your dog is left outside all the time or just occasionally always check him regularly so you know he is safe.

A large dog house is not always more comfortable for the dog. This is especially important for dogs in cooler climates. If your dog house it too big your dog will not be able to warm it up with their body heat. The ideal size of an outdoor dog house is just big enough for your dog to turn around and stretch out without touching the walls. The door should have enough room to allow your dog to enter it without scrunching down.

The floor should be at least several inches from the ground to protect against water and moisture. Bedding can be made from straw which is changed regularly. The roof should be sloped to allow snow to slide off. Some of the chemicals used in pressure treated wood are harmful to your dog so do not purchase a dog house which contains it. Before you decide that your dog should live outdoors make sure it can handle it. Many of the smaller breeds are not hardy enough to live outdoors while the larger dogs, especially those bred to be working dogs, should have no problem.

Stop Your Dog’s Boredom In Its Tracks

Uncategorized No Comments »

Have you ever come home from work to find that your puppy or dog has chewed your sofa to bits or has dug up your lawn?  If this has happened to you, no doubt you want to avoid it happening again.  One possible reason for this kind of behavior is separation anxiety, especially when a dog has been left alone for a long period.  However, it might just be that the cause is simply just boredom.

Like humans, dogs are sociable animals and like companionship or need ways to amuse themselves.  It shouldn’t, therefore, surprise you that your dog may get bored if left alone for many hours.  If you don’t provide stimulation for your dog, he will find his own activities and these could involve chewing up your possession, digging up your garden, barking or whining constantly.

It is not recommended that dogs not be left alone for longer than 4 hours at a time.  Maybe your lifestyle or job forces you to leave your dog alone for lengthy periods of time. In that case, here are a few tips:

•    One option is to hire a dog walker.  Maybe you can get a friend or neighbour to walk your dog. If not, you could hire professional dog-walker.  Not only does your dog get a chance to relieve himself, but the sights, sounds and smells of the neighborhood keep your dog’s brain stimulated.  The exercise is great for him too

•    Just as being an only child can be lonely, so can being an only puppy or dog.  It may be worth thinking about having another dog as a companion.

•    If your dog has a tendency to dig, then why not give him a specific digging pit in your yard or garden. You can make it more interesting by burying treats in it. It could help relieve boredom.  You could create a digging pit where he can dig as much as he wants without destroying your lawn.  At the beginning it is crucial to make him want to use the pit by building up a positive association with it. You can tempt him into it with treats and have some treats in the pit for him to find.

•    Provide your puppy or dog with a few well-chosen chew toys and rotate them every day so that he doesn’t become bored with them. Dispensing toys have a great interest for dogs when they are stuffed with treats as you can imagine. I would recommend that you try them. Also, I recommend you dog-proof your house as much as possible so that anything chewable is out of reach!I.

•    One way to keep up your dog’s interest is to hide treats around the house.  The treats should be placed to provide a bit of a challenge to your dog, but reasonably easy to access.  You could hide them under an upside-down bowl or Frisbee, or in an old sock.

I hope you find these recommendations helpful in relieving your dog’s boredom.  Obviously when you are with your dog, make sure that you take him out for regular walks and play games with him.  It is essential that you puppy dog is given the correct training.

Dog ownership is a responsibility and if you think that owning a dog just for the sake you have something to guard your house from intruders, then, you should not get a dog and instead, go get a tiger, tiger.

Dogs can never be trained in one way. Different breeds need different types of training but the goal is common, either to make them behave or to be very flexible and comfortable with other people or animals. Dogs are pack animals and always want to have companions. It loves to be with its owners. Most people assume that the dog wants to be outside somewhere in the yard or something. While some dogs might, and a few will accept it, most dogs want to be with their people. When pet dog owners leave their dogs outside or otherwise alone, the dog exposed to lots of high risks and risks for other people as well. One of the risk is that the animal will become an annoyance and eventually wind up in a shelter. A lonely dog will do anything to relieve itself of that stress. Typically they will bark, howl, dig, or become destructive. They might bite at people who do visit them, thus causing lesser visits. This attitude of biting is often because of the irritation of being kept apart from other animals.

So, what is the best way to train a dog? Should you hire a trainer or according to dog training book reviews, you can train your own dog and training your own dog in your own pace and time might even strengthen the relationship between you and the animal. Stop Your Puppy Jumping Up On People

Uncategorized No Comments »

At first you may think it’s quite cute when your puppy jumps up on you. But it ceases to be funny when your full-size dog starts to jump up on people with dirty paws – somewhat embarrassing. So it’s best to stop this inappropriate behavior while he is still young. It’s a big mistake to encourage it and then later have to try to stop the behavior.

Jumping up most often occurs when someone arrives at your home or when you meet someone while you’re taking your dog for a walk. So, it’s a good idea to coach your dog to sit in these circumstances.

Often the jumping up is a greeting but in some cases it may mean that your dog is trying to become dominant over you. Other problem behaviors can be caused by dominance and this definitely needs to be prevented. You should be the dominant one, the pack leader.

You need to appreciate the concept of positive reinforcement. There are various options for rewards that you can use as positive reinforcement: tasty treats, affection and praise. It’s vital that you stop giving any reinforcement for the behavior of jumping up. So rather than giving your dog a lot of attention as he jumps up, you must ignore him while he is in a state of excitement. Avoid giving him any eye contact.

Contrary to this, when he is no longer excited and has all his feet on the ground you can show him affection.

Hopefully, your dog may already sit on command. If so it’s a good idea to get him to sit as your enter the house or as guests arrive. When he does sit, give him a affection or a tasty treat. If he doesn’t already sit on command, you should work on this and other obedience training. It’s much easier to start solid obedience training in specific short sessions, away from any distractions. Make sure the training session are fun and enjoyable for your dog.

It’s vital that you get everyone’s cooperation who comes into contact with your dog, so that they don’t upset all your work. Get them to agree not to enthusiastically meet your dog. They should avoid eye contact with your dog.

In the beginning, it may be worth putting your dog in another room when visitors arrive, so that you avoid the stimulating situation at the door.

I hope that this helps with dogs jumping up. Read more about other behavior problems in dogs such as aggressive dogs.

How to Stop Dog from Barking

Uncategorized No Comments »

By Sandra Scott

Dogs bark for a variety of reasons. Your dog may begin to bark when a stranger approaches or if your house is on fire. Fear and pain are other reasons for dog barking. In addition, dogs bark as an attention getter or as an act of intimidation towards you or others.

For a really excellent dog training guide to stop dogs barking, see: How to Stop Dogs Barking

Whatever the reason, we are all in agreement that it can be very aggravating and seek ways to stop dogs barking. Many dog owners with dogs that bark constantly are charged with disturbing the peace. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to stop dogs barking for no good reason.

The most effective method for stopping your dog from barking is to teach him when it is permissible for him to bark. Although a variety of options may be considered, the most effective method is the reward/reprimand technique. This technique is successful and humane.

Some dog owners try to avoid this training option by using an electronic collar, also called a bark collar. The collar is worn by the dog, which is then activated when he starts to bark. When the bark collar gives off a small electronic shock, the dog is taken by surprise. Over time, dogs begin to connect the unpleasant experience with their barking so they stop barking. It is my opinion that this is a cruel and inhumane method to stop dogs barking.

Some dogs do not connect the shock with their barking, which is one good reason for not using electronic collars. They get used to the shocks and continue barking. Also, dogs with thick coats may not feel the electric shock if the prongs on the collar are not in touching the skin. In addition, just using an electronic collar to stop dog barking hardly ever works. Normally, the best results are achieved when obedience training is included.

There are some people who believe that electronic bark collars can be discouraging to dogs. Because of this, some people use citronella collars which operate in a similar way to electronic collars. Citronella collars emit a mist each time the dog barks. The smell is disliked by most dogs. Once your dog understands that the foul smell is emitted when he barks, he will stop barking to avoid the smell. The success rate is approximately the same as with electronic collars.

Just a reminder, if you’re looking for a great free site that will help you with your dog behavior problems, take a look at:  How to Stop Dogs Barking

The vast majority of vets and dog trainers believe that, although shock collars can be useful, they are no substitute for good dog training. In addition, obedience training does more than simply stop dogs barking. It also helps with other dog behavior issues.

The most drastic option (and, to my mind, most barbaric) is surgery to stop dogs from barking. A piece of tissue is removed from the larynx which prevents the dog from barking. It is not unheard of for the dog’s bark to return, voiding the surgery. Thankfully, most vets oppose the surgical method to stop dogs barking.

Finally, it is my hope that you now agree that obedience training is the method that should be used to prevent dog barking. You should bear in mind that, if your dogs stops barking by using a barking collar, he will also not alert you to an intruder in your house. By providing your dog with good obedience training, he will protect you and your family but he will also understand when barking is appropriate.

Stop Aggressive Dog Behavior

Uncategorized No Comments »

By Sandra Scott

Aggression is instinctive for dogs and everyone knows that dogs can badly hurt people and other animals. Fortunately, there are ways for dog owners to prevent dog aggression. It is essential that dog owners who have an aggressive dog make sure that he is given obedience training, before someone is injured.

Here’s a great guide for training aggressive dogs that you should check out: Training Aggressive Dogs.

Aggression towards strangers and aggression towards family members are the most frequently displayed types of dog aggression. Dog aggression can be caused by many different factors so it should be dealt with in different ways.

Aggression Towards Strangers

Dogs will often dislike unfamiliar people and other animals until they have an opportunity to get used to being around them. Getting dogs accustomed to being with people and animals they don’t know is called socialization. Socialization is a vital part of training your dog. So how will socialization stop an aggressive dog from attacking people who make deliveries to your house?. A socialized dog begins to understand that new experiences can be enjoyable instead of frightening.

Your dog should learn this important lesson as a puppy. If your dog is frequently with various kinds of people (such as children, teenagers, men wearing uniforms, old people, people wearing helmets or carrying umbrellas) in a relaxed and fun environment, the chances of your dog being being aggressive towards strangers are much less.

Just a reminder, if you are looking for a great free site to help you solve your dog’s aggressive behavior, you should check out: Stop Dog Aggression.

If you are seeking a good venue for socializing your dog, group training sessions, frequently held by large pet stores or at a veterinary office, are a good option. Your dog will learn how to behave with unfamiliar dogs. He will also realize that he need not fear the unfamiliar people at these sessions. Make sure you don’t overwhelm him - allow his tolerance to build gradually by starting off slowly.

Aggressive Dog Behavior Towards Family Members

The most common reasons for dogs showing aggression to their human family are:

  • Your dog is trying to protect his belongings (food, toys, etc.) from an apparent threat (that is to say you or your family members). This highly possessive behavior (called resource guarding) is quite normal in dogs.
  • This resource guarding behavior is brought on by a feeling of dominance and relates to your dog’s perceived ranking in the hierarchy of your household. To your dog, your family composition is no different from that of a dog pack. If your dog sees himself in a higher position than you or your family members, he’ll become aggressive.

As a lower ranked dog wouldn’t behave in an aggressive manner towards a dog that was higher in the pecking order, resource guarding is clearly dominant behavior.

Dog obedience training is the best method to prevent aggression in dogs, which will ensure that your dog knows that you are the “top dog”. Your “alpha dog” status can be reinforced with rewards such as treats and praise when he responds appropriately to a command, and with “time-out” for misbehaving.

Dogs are More Than Pets

Uncategorized No Comments »

Dogs are unique animals because they can immediately become a part of your family.  If you have had your dog for a long time there is no question this is true. The animal and human bond goes back to prehistoric times.

Just imagine, a prehistoci hunter finds a lost wolf cub and brings the cub home and cares for it.Eventually, they may have found out that the cub became a part of their family.  To top it off the hunter probably found that the wolf was helpful for practical reasons as well.

Part of the reason for this is because wolves and dogs in general have similar social systems to those in the human world.A dominant adult male leads all others in the pack to help them survive. If the leader goes beyond his bounds, a strong female will step in.

Just like your family has to work together as a group, so does the dog pack. Both sides have social bonds and loyalty.  It doesn’t matter whether this family group or pack of dogs fight, they are always united and come together when it matters.

Dogs possess a vast arrary of strengths. Many are superior hunters with a strong sense of smell.  Their ability to survive on something as small as food scraps makes them ideal to have around whether you’re referring to ancient or modern times.

Of course, the wolf pack that prehistoric man would have found isn’t quite as gentle and kind as the dogs we keep in our homes today.Just as dogs today are suitable to our family environment, wolves were suited to the personalities of prehistoric people.  It is our own domestication of dogs that makes them more and more suitable to living the family lifestyle with each passing generation of dog.

The coming together of the dog culture and the human culture created a very strong bond.  It doesn’t matter what kind of dog you have or whether it’s primarily a companion or a working dog, it is a friend that will stick with you for life.

You might not use the dog as you primary means of survival like some groups did years ago, but it’s likely your dog has its own role. Some roles of working dogs today are..

•    Herding stock on farms
•    Detecting drugs
Helping to lead blind people
Guarding businesses
•    Rescue services

Beyond those extraordinary roles your dog can develop a special, emotional bond with you and the other members of your family.Your dog will be there to comfort you and play with you.

Nurturing and caring are essential for dogs to thrive. As long as you give them food and attention you will have a friend for life.

Dog Food Secrets - Learn the facts every dog owner should know

By Sandra Scott

I’ve chosen to review Dog Food Secrets because of my concern over the negative affect of commercially produced dog foods on the well-being of our dogs. Andrew Lewis makes some highly controversial claims in his top selling package, Dog Food Secrets. Dog Food Secrets makes dog owners more aware of the potential dangers to their pets from feeding them some commercial dog foods.

If you are interested in learning more about this interesting guide, take a look at: Dog Food Secrets

Andrew Lewis claims that:

  • Dog Food Secrets offers a simple solution proven to increase the lifespan of dogs by up to 134% and save you up to $10,000 in vet bills and food costs.
  • Most commercially produced dog foods are killing dogs at an early age. The average North American dog lives 11 years, however the life expectancy for a dog living under optimal conditions is 27 years.
  • Most commercial dog foods are nutritionally inadequate and contain deadly chemicals and possibly even mad cow disease.
  • Dog aggression can be increased by the chemicals in commercially produced dog food.

What is included in the package?

Dog Food Secrets has three packages: Bronze ($27), Silver ($37), ad Gold ($47). The confidential Dog Food Report is included in the Gold package.

Here are just a few of the great many of topics covered in this comprehensive guide to improve your dog’s health, vigor and life expectancy:

  • 6 essential nutrients to maximize a dog’s health
  • Dog health care (including perfect body temperature, heart beat and respiration for your dog; how to prevent and treat heartworm; tests for intestinal worms and parasites)
  • Best fruit snacks
  • 55 nutritious recipes dogs love
  • 20 human foods deadly to dogs
  • How many calories your dog should be consuming
  • 5 vaccinations dogs must have
  • Checklist for 18 most common dental diseases

In Conclusion:

The information in this package is certainly disturbing and an eye-opener. I have not examined the scientific evidence to which he refers so I cannot comment on the veracity of his claims about commercial dog food.

That said, Dog Food Secrets does provide great suggestions for feeding and taking care of your dog, plus nourishing recipes which will hopefully extend your dog’s life.

Andrew Lewis is so sure that you will really like his package that you can get a 100% refund and still get to keep the whole package!

I strongly recommend that you take a look at Dog Food Secrets for the sake of your dog’s health.

Secrets to Dog Training Review

By Sandra Scott

Secrets to Dog Training (formerly named SitStayFetch) has been revamped and was officially launched on February 2, 2009. SitStayFetch has been the top selling dog training course for over four years, and it has been bought by over 64,000 dog owners world-wide. Having taken a close look at it, I understand why it has outsold all other dog training guides on the internet period!. Secrets to Dog Training is a new and improved version!

Secrets to Dog Training is an extremely comprehensive guide, written by the world renowned dog professional, Daniel Stevens. This 261-page guide gives dog owners step-by-step and easy to follow instructions which will help them to understand and quickly solve their dog’s behavior problems. It also has lots of great pictures!

Click Here to Get Your Copy of Secrets to Dog Training

All of the training methods described in the book are tried and true, having been used by Daniel Stevens in his own life as a professional dog trainer.

What is Included?

This course is so comprehensive that the table of contents takes up five pages just to list everything that is included. The book is much more than just another dog training guide, although I would buy it for that section alone. The first section is aimed at new dog owners, including topics such as: where to find a puppy, choosing the right puppy for your family, dog-proofing your home, diet and nutrition, dog breed information, and much more. This is just some of the topics covered which gives you some idea of the comprehensive amount of information.

The guide includes recommendations for a number of different training techniques such as clicker training, head collar training, and dog whispering, to mention just a few. Following this, common dog behavior problems e.g., barking, aggression, digging, chewing, jumping, were covered. This chapter includes several case studies which I found to be particularly informative and interesting. Everyone loves a good story!

In addition, there is a chapter on how to understand your dog and the significance of the dog owner being perceived as the top dog. Doggy facial expressions, vocals and body language are also included in this section. Aided by photographs, the chapters on obedience training are well articulated and the many stances and commands are presented in excellent detail.

This is just a small amount of what is covered but I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s an impressive amount of information.

What I Particularly Liked

I had already heard great things about this course before I actually took a look at it so had high expectations. I have to say that Secrets to Dog Training has not disappointed me – in fact, I’m amazed at the quality and quantity of the information offered for such a low price. It is being offered at the low price of only $39.95, which is tremendous value for such an excellent product.

This book is well-written using easily understood language. Also, the book is divided into small sections which enhanced my reading experience and made the course very easy to follow and understand. A wall of text can be quite overfacing!

I was delighted to discover that Secrets to Dog Training includes obedience training for dogs of every age. So many dog trainers focus on puppies but training and behavior problems don’t necessarily end once a dog reaches adulthood.

It’s also great that free consultations are provided by the Secrets to Dog Training team to anyone purchasing the guide. Simply by sending the team an e-mail, you will receive an individual response for your particular dog problem. You’ll be given a response that will be jam-packed with knowledgeable advice and practical tips.

There’s no way for you to lose with Secrets to Dog Training as they offer a 60-day full guarantee.

Free Bonuses

As I’ve previously mentioned, the Secrets of Dog Training course is outstanding value; however, there’s even more being offered!

When you buy the course, you will also receive an audio book and five additional e-books covering dog aggression, house training, dog grooming, security training, and secrets to becoming the alpha dog.

To help you solve your dog’s aggravating behavior issues, a new 30 minute video has been included with the Secrets to Dog Training package. Peformed by the well-liked and respected dog trainer, Dave Johnson, it all seems very simple!

Secrets to Dog Training – My Conclusions

You’ve probably already gathered that I’m impressed. I thought I understood dogs before, but this course has shown me just how little I knew.

The material provided is extremely detailed and comprehensive, yet easily understood. Your dog doesn’t need to have behavior or obedience issues in order for this book to be useful to you. The information in this guide would be of use to all dog owners looking to have a great rapport with their dog.

I highly recommend Secrets to Dog Training to anyone who currently owns a puppy or dog or is thinking about adopting one.

When it comes to the art of giving, a gift of clothes is tricky job. If you must give clothes this season, there’s one gift on your list who’s sure to look great in any outfit you buy him. He’ll wear your gift with pride and appreciation; head held high and tail wagging. You are guessing right it’s your dog or your best friend’s dog. It’s so easy you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it before. Dogs love attention from you.

Dog clothes shopping for are a lot like shopping clothes for babies. Unless you’re going for practicality, cuteness is what counts. And that is done easily, given that any dog wearing clothes looks pretty cute. Choices in dog clothes range from winter sweaters to football jerseys and summer tees. Also you can choose from Dog necklaces Dog hats. If you have a mischievous sense of humor? Making the baby look silly might be a no-no, but its pretty fun when it comes to dressing up a dog. There are some really creative designer work for doggie costumes out there that can give you smile. There are really only a couple of rules you’ll need to keep in mind when shopping for dog clothes:

One is that if the dog in question is an avid chewer, you should avoid buying him anything tempting. Shiny buttons, fringe, and feathers are examples that come to mind. Anything that can easily be chewed off and swallowed is a choking hazard and can get stuck in the dog’s digestive tract. The other rule is that any dog, no matter how understanding, will be more relaxed wearing clothes that fit. Proper fit typically requires measuring from the dog’s collar to the base of her tail for length. Most dog clothes girth can be adjusted with Velcro tabs, but could still be an issue with a barrel-chested breed such as a bulldog. Measurements are usually in inches.

Now, if you’re shopping for your own dog, you’re all set. But if you’re buying clothes for someone else’s dog, I’ve got a few more tips to share with you. Surveys conducted on the subject of gift preferences of men and women have shown that men prefer gifts that are more playful or practical. So, if the dog’s owner is male this might translate into a doggie Happy Tails Cowboy & Cowgirl Costume, a funny costume, or a reflective hunting vest. Women, on the other hand, prefer gifts that are beautiful, memorable, and personal. Women, on the other hand, prefer gifts that are beautiful, memorable, and personal!
